About the Painting

"Topanga" is a featured painting that took over 3 years to create. Using precise and tediously small brush strokes, Astatke developed a layering technique embedded within each of the painting's versions that's final result produced the sculpturesque piece seen today. Known for her use of color, the artists touts that she spends almost as much time mixing colors as she does painting. The serene waves are numerically aligned, 24 in total - mirrored by the 16 flames in the left eye. With a strategic use of and development of various shades of blue, Astatke creates a mesmerizing effect where the painting elicits both melancholy and chaos for its viewer. Her paintings are reflective of a surrealism and romanticism that has long since escaped the modern world. She has since expanded the theories to create other identifiable signature works that marry sculptures and paintings.
